Desert Dreams

Gregg Photias’ path to building a life and legacy in the Coachella Valley.

Like so many other people in the Coachella Valley, Greg Photias landed in the desert through unplanned circumstances. Almost 30 years ago, a work transfer brought Gregg and his wife, Helene, to this desert haven, with their then two-year-old son, Devon. The family quickly settled into the welcoming community of La Quinta, where they fell in love with the stunning landscapes, diverse restaurants, and vibrant local culture.

One of the first things that struck Gregg about Coachella Valley was the deep pride residents take in their community. “People take care of their homes, and there’s beautiful landscaping all around. We get to live where people vacation. It’s an oasis haven that has a small-town feel with fewer issues than big cities like LA, New York, or Chicago,” Gregg reflects. The couple found not only a picturesque place to live but also a nurturing environment to raise their family.

Family is at the heart of Gregg and Helene's lives. Their family now includes their 31-year-old son Devon, their 26-year-old daughter Kyrsti, and their adorable Shorkie, Gypsie Athena. They are also proud grandparents to a two-year-old grandson. Their close-knit family enjoys regular gatherings, with Gregg's sister living just a few streets away, reinforcing their strong family bonds.

Gregg’s passion for golf is a perfect match for the Coachella Valley, renowned for its plethora of world-class golf courses. When he's not on the greens, he and Helene enjoy riding e-bikes around Old Town La Quinta, exploring local street fairs and farmers markets. A favorite spot for the family is BaBaLoo Lounge & Gastropub on Hwy 111, a moderately-priced hidden gem known for its Cuban and Peruvian flavors, live music, and delectable dishes.

Through his business, Vision Turf and Lighting, Gregg has had the opportunity to meet many residents across the valley, many of whom have become longtime friends. Gregg’s enthusiasm for his work is palpable. “Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” is a cliché that truly resonates with Gregg. After working in the artificial grass business since 2008, he decided to start his own business in 2020, and he hasn’t looked back.

Artificial turf is a popular choice among homeowners and businesses in the valley, offering an attractive, low-maintenance solution that significantly reduces water consumption. Gregg and his team at Vision Turf and Lighting provide a range of services, from installing pet-friendly and high-traffic turf to creating special features like putting greens and bocce ball courts for residential homes, hotels, and country clubs. They also design and install landscape lighting systems that enhance the security and beauty of outdoor spaces.

One of the most common questions Gregg receives is about the benefits of artificial turf. Besides its year-round durable and consistent natural appearance, artificial turf reduces water consumption and eliminates overspray or water damage from sprinklers against patios, walls, decorative pieces, and cars. Additionally, it removes the need for chemicals and fertilizers, and weed problems are mitigated with a weed fabric installed under the turf. Grass reseeding is no longer necessary, reducing costs and preventing muddy messes for pets, and pests such as gnats and bugs are minimized due to less moisture.

Engaged and invested in his community, Gregg is dedicated to giving back. He supports local non-profits, participating in golf tournaments benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs, and events like ‘The Shoopy Scramble’ that raises funds for skin cancer detection and treatment. His business also periodically donates a portion of their profits to support local outreach and non-profit organizations.

Gregg Photias is more than just a business owner; he is a dedicated family man and an active community member. His passion for enhancing outdoor spaces and his commitment to his family and community have made Vision Turf and Lighting a beloved local business. Through his work and community involvement, he continues to make a positive impact in Coachella Valley.
