Exploring Arizona’s Winter Trails with Your Dog: Tips for Keeping Fido Safe from Valley Fever
Winter in the greater Phoenix area is the perfect time to explore Arizona's stunning hiking trails with your furry friend! While you're out adventuring, it’s worth being mindful of some health considerations, like valley fever, to keep your pet healthy and happy
Valley fever, a fungal infection caused by Coccidioides spores, is common in Arizona’s desert soil. These spores become airborne when the ground is disturbed by wind, construction, or foot traffic—especially occurring on hiking trails. When your dog inhales dust carrying these spores, they can become infected. Symptoms may include coughing, lethargy, loss of appetite, and in severe cases, lameness or difficulty breathing.
It’s good to be aware of valley fever, but it’s helpful to know that your dog (or even cat!) can still pick it up even at home. But don’t worry—by keeping an eye out for symptoms like coughing, tiredness, or a drop in appetite, you can help catch it early and keep your pet healthy while enjoying the great outdoors!
The good news is that you can still enjoy the beautiful trails while reducing risks! Stick to paths with firm, packed soil, especially after windy days, and avoid areas with loose dust. If your dog loves to dig, you may want to limit this in high-risk areas to minimize exposure.
As always, pack plenty of water for your dog and take regular breaks in shaded spots. Even in winter, staying hydrated is key to making sure your hike is fun and safe for both you and your pet.
